Highlighted Lifting Crane Projects

Wadsworth Atheneum Air Handler

The Wadsworth Atheneum is the oldest public art museum in the United States. It is also recognized in the national register of historic places and has a estimated value of over $1 Billion dollars in contents. We were tasked with lifting 5 20,000 pound air handling pieces over the main building at a radius of over 120 feet from the crane. Once on the roof the airhandler would be mated together by our riggers so the equipment could be made mechanically functional by the HVAC contractor.

UTC Fuel Cell Stop & Shop Torrington

For this project we were asked to place a 60,000 pound Fuel Cell behind the new Stop & Shop store in Torrington, CT.  The Fuel Cell was to be set on a pad that was bordering electrical wires.  The wire restriction required the crane to be not too big as to take up all the available space, but big enough to pick the 60,000 pounds.  The tight quarters to the electrical wires made us rotate the fuel cell, over the store, so that the rear of the crane boom would maintain the required safe minimum distance to the electrical wires.  Once clear of the electrical wires we were able to set the unit on the pad at the required distance from the crane.

Mystic Aquarium

At Mystic Aquarium we were asked to load 7 Beluga whales for transport to their new home. The heaviest whale weighed in at 2500lbs and was quite the “wiggler” as it was not used to flying through the air. We were asked to have an extra delicate touch to handle the whales with the utmost precaution and care.

125,000 Pound Generator Loading

Here, we used two cranes to place 125,000 pound generators onto a heavy haul trailer at Westover Air Force Base.  We were responsible for rigging the generators to the exterior of the hanger using special rigging airbags and skates.   At 125,000 pounds the generators needed a safe eye and gentle touch to ensure the job went smoothly.

UMass Medical Building

On this job in western Massachusetts, we were responsible for storing and handling the new units, trucking the new units to the jobsite, replacing the units on the roof, and disposing of the old units.  These units weighed in at 12,000 lbs a piece.

Stop & Shop Stonington, CT

At Stop & Shop locations throughout the area, they place 15-20,000 pound refrigeration houses on the roof to service the store.  The trick to rigging these particular units is getting the units to hang level enough to lift and set correctly.  Spreader Bars and special rigging as seen in the photos is used to accomplish this.

Ringling Brothers Circus

The “Greatest Show on Earth” needed to repair the elephant train car on this particular project.  The train car weighed 140,000 pounds total.  We were asked to lift half the car so the brakes and axles could be changed on that side of the car.

MiJack 90RT Assembly

For this project we were asked by Mijack to assemble one of their freight yard forklifts in Springfield.  The forklift, when put together, weighs in the neighborhood of 150,000 pounds and requires 2 cranes.  We used our 60 and 90 Ton truck cranes to perform the job.  The heaviest piece weighed in at 81,000 pounds, and the forklift mast, which had to be stood up, weighed in at 50,000 pounds.

Ingleside Mall

Our expandable 90 Ton truck crane was tasked with setting 2,000 pound units on a part of the mall that was 50’ tall, with a final spot 165’ from the center pin of the crane.  These picks required us to use our jib inserts that lengthened the overall jib length to 74’.  The jib was then offset to 30 degrees for maximum penetration of the roof with the highest capacity.

The Traveler’s Building

This job on the Traveler’s Building in Hartford required us to set up the crane in the middle of Grove Street.  This icon of Hartford stands 137’ tall to the first roof!  We used 2 16’ jib inserts for this job.  The reach on this job was 165’ up and 120’ in from the crane.
